6th Grade ELA Expectations:

The priority standards that encompass the ELA portion of your student’s day will consist of a few important skills and practices that we will be doing each week. To begin with, your student will be required to take a reading comprehension test, Reading Counts App, on a book they have read and completed every 5-6 weeks. This means, I am expecting them to be reading at home each and every night for at least 20 minutes.

Secondly, your student is given a Common Core State Standard vocabulary Word-of-the-week. This “word” will be encouraged in their writing, speech, and practice. This skill is intended to increase vocabulary and reading fluency. Please ask them about this word and encourage its use at home.

Thirdly, my class is intertwined with both literature and informational texts. Throughout the year we work hard on citing, analyzing, and increasing our vocabulary acquisition and comprehension. Have your student tell you each and every night what they read and discussed in class. This communicative element will deepen their understanding and retention of the text.

Lastly, I will be actively engaging in AVID strategies throughout the year. AVID stands for “Advancement Via Individual Determination.” This will require your student to have and keep an organized spiral notebook, INB. This notebook will house most, if not all, of their notes, reading tasks, and work. I do not assign homework, but I would like my students to take this spiral notebook, INB, home each night to look over and/or study. This will help them greatly! (Any work that is taken home is left over work from our class day, and will be due the following morning.) Thank you for your support and at-home cooperation!
